Preliminary rounds

The 20 A-class participants and 20 B-class participants will each be given a number from 1 to 20 through a random drawing of lots. In the first preliminary round, No. 1 plays No. 2, No. 3 plays No. 4 and so on down to Nos. 19 and 20. The 10 winners in the first preliminary round qualify for the final tournament.

The 10 losers in the first preliminary round play in the second preliminary round, pairings being decided by drawing of lots. The 5 winners in this round qualify for the final tournament. Those who lose in both rounds do not qualify for the final tournament.

Players are allotted 20 minutes' playing time. After this time expires, they must make each move within 30 seconds.

Final tournament

The 15 qualifiers in both A Class and B Class draw lots to decide the pairings. Players are allotted 25 minutes' playing time. After this time expires, they must make each move within 30 seconds.

Losers in the preliminary rounds and early rounds of the final tournament may play games against each other or teaching games with Shogi professionals.

4) Rules

* All games will be even games, Black and White being decided by furigoma (tossing five pawns).

* Even if your opponent is not present when the signal is given to begin the game, the clock will be started.

* Those who arrive late will play the game with the time remaining on the clock.

* Press your clock with the hand with which you make your move.

* White has the right to decide where the clock is placed.

* Players press their own clocks (apart from the Semi-Finals and Final).

* Byoyomi (second count) is indicated by the clock. When the clock indicates “0”, the player loses the game.

* In the event of repetition of moves, the game is replayed with colors reversed, using the remaining times on the clocks. However, if one side has less than 10 minutes remaining, a decision will be made based on the progress of the other games, etc.

* If both players have entering kings, the loser will be the side with less than 27 points (5 points for rooks and bishops, 1 point for all other pieces except the king). If both sides have the same number of points, White will be the winner.

* If it is discovered that a player has made an illegal move, the player will immediately lose the game.

* When determining the result of a game, losing on time and resignation will be given priority. However, when a record of the game remains and it is proved that an illegal move has been made, this record takes precedence. (This applies until the beginning of the next game.)

* If any other problem occurs, the clocks of both players will be stopped and the referee or a member of the executive committee will make a decision.
